At Cavalier Bird Toys; we take the safety and integrity of all of our bird toys very seriously. There are many considerations in making truly safe and long-lasting bird toys. Below you will find lots of information about the steps we take to make sure our bird toys are safe and appropriate for the size of bird for which they were intended.

PVC parts

We specifically make our PVC parrot toys out of “Schedule-40" bird-safe PVC. This means that no matter how long your bird licks, gnaws, scratches or tries to chew on the PVC toys, they will not be toxic to them. We also choose to use PVC, as opposed to other plastics, because it is very strong and will last a very long time! One customer just recently said that her parrot has been playing with their Cavalier Bird Toys PVC foraging toy for over 10 years and it is still like new!

Stainless steel

We use stainless steel on all of our bird toys; and nickel plated parts when we cannot find stainless steel in that toy building part. Stainless steel and nickel plating is pet safe, and it is virtually indestructible to your pet bird or parrot of any kind. Our stainless steel chain comes in a variety of thicknesses, which we use for the appropriately sized bird: the smallest chain for the smallest birds, up to the large chain for largest birds. It is important that you consider the size of your bird when buying toys, and buy appropriately sized toys. For example, small beaks may not be able to handle the larger chain, and large strong beaks may dent the smaller chain.

Bells on bird toys for Specific Size Birds

The AnnaBell parrot paper shredding toy is the best example for sizing your toys appropriately.

• The Small AnnaBell parrot paper toy is made with a small gauge stainless steel chain, small quick link, and small bell.

The gauge of the chain is small, but will withstand any amount of torture your small bird may be able to put on it. The quick link is strong enough that your small bird won't be able to unscrew the hook, and if given to a small bird, they won't be able to pull out the clapper from inside the bell. This makes it part of our "Indestructible" line of toys (as with all of the AnnaBell toys).

• The Medium AnnaBell parrot paper toy is made with a medium gauge stainless steel chain, medium quick link, and medium bell.

The Medium AnnaBell is stronger for the medium size bird: The gauge of the chain is medium, but will withstand any amount of torture your medium bird may be able to put on it. The quick link is a little thicker and screws a little tighter, and attached is the medium size bell...stronger and more durable in order to withstand your bird’s obsession with pulling out the clapper.

• The Large AnnaBell parrot paper toy is made with a large gauge stainless steel chain, large quick link, and large bell.

The Large AnnaBell uses the biggest and strongest of everything! We use a thick gauge chain, a large quick link that can be closed with pliers if you need to (because some birds are obsessed with taking things apart!), and the largest bell with the toughest clapper so your big boy doesn't destroy all of the noisy joy out of their toy right away.

Toothbrushes

Birds love different shapes and textures. And they love the toothbrushes that we add to some of our toys. Please note that we take our use of toothbrushes very seriously. There are many reports of people letting their birds play with their toothbrushes, only to find that the bristles may contain tiny metal pieces that are holding them to the head of the toothbrush. These metal pieces can be fatal to your parrot! At Cavalier Bird Toys, we’re very careful to only use quality toothbrushes made in the USA and only those made with soft nylon bristles with rounded ends. We have even cut our toothbrushes open to be sure there are no small metal pieces. Our toothbrushes are metal-free and safe for your bird.

Durability

We have a unique way to test the ‘indestructible’ parts that make up our toys: we slam the part down on concrete as hard as we can, and if it even so much as cracks, we won't use it for our toys. We try our best to only provide toys with parts that are strong, durable and will last, saving you money in the long run.

Dishwasher Safe

Most of our toys (with the exception of toys with rope, leather, paper, bagels, or wood) are made of materials that can go into the dishwasher without being harmed. When the wash cycle is done, take the toy out and dry it.

How do you keep your bird interested in the same bird toys you have?

Rotate your bird’s toys. If your pet bird has the same toys around all of the time eventually he’ll become bored by them. The next time you order a new toy, take that opportunity to remove a toy that your parrot doesn’t seem interested in anymore. Wash it, maybe even throw it in the dishwasher, hide it away and bring it out in another few months—if your parrot ever was interested, he will be again!

Some parts of toys do not last forever:

The Indestructible Curly Perch, in comparison with other twisted perches or boings, is a product designed to last! But note: the 50-feet of sisal rope wrapped around the perch will be very tempting to most pet birds, and over time they may tear it to shreds! The great thing is; the perch itself will last forever, unlike other boings which become eventually something your bird can't even use.
